The upcoming by-election in the Assin North Constituency has become a crucial battleground for Ghana’s political parties, with the Director of the National Democratic Congress’ International Relations Directorate, Alex Segbefia, asserting that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has more to lose than the NDC.
Segbefia argues that the NPP’s actions leading up to the by-election, particularly in their attempts to hinder a fair campaign process for the NDC candidate, Gyakye Quayson, have unintentionally generated sympathy for him.
“While it was originally our seat, the NPP has inadvertently created a sympathy value for Gyakye Quayson by giving the impression that they are working to prevent him from having a fair election process,” Segbefia stated during an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile.
The former MP for the Assin North constituency was disqualified after a court ruling revealed that he held dual citizenship, which is incompatible with holding a government position under the constitution.
In a noteworthy decision, the court has determined that the case will be heard on a daily basis, despite the defense’s request for the trial to take place after the by-election.
Segbefia expressed his concerns over the court’s priorities, highlighting that there are numerous individuals in remand who have been awaiting their cases to be heard for over a year. He questioned the apparent eagerness to expedite Gyakye Quayson’s case while other cases languish in the system.
“While the court has the discretion to set dates, we must consider the ethical and moral implications. How many people in remand have been denied their right to a swift trial? Why is the court more interested in Gyakye Quayson’s case?” Segbefia remarked.
The former MP further warned that the court’s perceived interference by the executive branch could potentially create problems for the country if left unaddressed.
As the Assin North by-election draws near, the political climate in the constituency remains tense, with both the NPP and the NDC strategizing and vying for victory. The outcome of this closely watched contest will undoubtedly impact the political landscape and shape the future trajectory of the parties involved.
