June 5th is observed annually as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. This significant day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, aims to shed light on the pressing issue of IUU fishing and its detrimental impact on our oceans.
IUU fishing poses a grave threat to global fish stocks and the marine environment as a whole. It is estimated that this illicit practice costs the global economy a staggering $23 billion each year. Apart from its economic implications, IUU fishing also contributes to overfishing, habitat destruction, and the loss of biodiversity.
The International Day for the Fight against IUU Fishing serves as a crucial platform to emphasize the importance of sustainable fisheries management and mobilize action to combat IUU fishing. Addressing this issue requires concerted efforts at both national and international levels. Some key measures that can be taken to counter IUU fishing include:
- Strengthening national and international fisheries laws and regulations: Enhancing legal frameworks is essential to deter and penalize those involved in IUU fishing activities.
- Increasing monitoring and enforcement of fisheries laws: Implementing robust monitoring systems and ensuring effective enforcement play a pivotal role in combating IUU fishing.
- Raising awareness: Educating the public and stakeholders about the detrimental consequences of IUU fishing helps foster a sense of responsibility and encourages support for sustainable fishing practices.
- Promoting sustainable fishing practices: Encouraging the adoption of sustainable fishing techniques and responsible fishing practices contributes to the preservation of marine ecosystems and the long-term viability of fish stocks.
The history behind the establishment of this significant day traces back to the Port State Measures Agreement, an international treaty specifically aimed at combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The agreement entered into force on June 5th, signifying a significant milestone in the fight against IUU fishing.
In July 2017, the Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal to declare June 5th as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Subsequently, in December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly, through its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries, officially proclaimed June 5th as the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.
It is worth mentioning that the UN General Assembly also designated 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, focusing on the crucial role played by small-scale fishermen and women who make up 90 percent of the world’s fisheries workforce.
As we observe the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, it is essential to recognize the significance of sustainable fisheries management and collective action in preserving our oceans’ health and ensuring the well-being of communities that depend on them.
