The Police have confirmed that a shootout in Bortianor, Greater Accra, resulted in the killing of five suspects. The incident occurred when the police visited the area and encountered individuals believed to be involved in landguard activities.
In a statement released on Saturday, June 10, 2023, the police explained that the operation was aimed at targeting criminal elements engaged in robbery and landguard activities, which had been causing fear and distress among residents and landowners in Bortianor and nearby communities.
Upon the arrival of the police team, the suspects, who were hiding, opened fire. In response, the police retaliated, leading to injuries and subsequent deaths of five suspects. The injured suspects managed to flee the scene and are currently being pursued by the police.
During the operation, the police seized several weapons as evidence. The retrieved items included an AK47 assault rifle, ten rounds of AK47 ammunition, a pump-action gun with nine rounds of BB cartridges, two pistols with ten rounds of 9mm ammunition, an unregistered Toyota Tacoma pickup, four motorbikes (three of which are unregistered), a knife, and a pepper spray.
The police have stated that they are actively pursuing the remaining suspects, including those who sustained injuries during the shootout. They have also urged the public, particularly residents of the Bortianor community, to report any individuals seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds. Such information will aid the police in taking swift action.
The incident reflects the ongoing efforts by the police to combat criminal activities and ensure the safety and security of the community.
